Seonhye Ji's solo exhibition 《깨달음 Realize》 delves into the profound journey of introspection and enlightenment that individuals undergo amidst the various 'Pains' encountered within their inner and outer worlds. Here, 'Pain' transcends mere suffering to represent circumstances of constraint beyond human control. Through the medium of painting, the artist translates this reflective process into a visual language. Employing monochromatic tones, Ji's paintings vividly portray the intense emotions and situations inherent in the human experience, captivating the viewer. Rather than focusing solely on the negative aspects of 'Pain', the exhibition explores the multifaceted nature of adversity encountered in life, highlighting moments of realization and personal growth.
Over the past decade or so, Seonhye Ji, who goes by the name "Jigwaja" instead of her real name, has presented a variety of experimental works based on her study of the human figure and human expression, with a deep interest and exploration of humanity at the core of her work. Primarily drawing figures with dry materials such as pencil and pen, and filling in the unseen and unknown beyond them with vividly colored abstract paintings, she has attempted to convey the intimate feelings, philosophies, and ideas of individuals through the various personas that appear on screen. However, as she continues to reflect on herself and explore the self, the meaning of persona is no longer personal, but expands into a wider and deeper world. The artist explains that through her work, she explores human existence and confronts her own nature, finding true liberation from the pain of suffering and desire. Her second solo exhibition, 《깨달음 Realize》 which takes place about seven years after her first, represents for the artist a return to her essence and an expansion from there.
The new works created for this exhibition are all done in monochromatic black and white. In the works, the representation of 'Pain' is expressed in the form of a pillar that appears to be light, creating a stark contrast with the darkness and humanity, bringing extreme emotions and situations into sharper focus. The column both penetrates and supports humans, and humans both embrace and radiate from it, suggesting that the presence of 'Pain' is not a negative thing, but rather a symbolic and metaphorical representation of the human ability to find hope and enlightenment in and through pain and suffering. In order to express the essence of humanity, the figures in the exhibition intentionally conceal many of the physical characteristics that would identify them, such as their gender and age, in order to depict them as they were at the beginning of time. This depicts a human being who has grown up, emptied of all the troubles that bind people, suggesting the appearance of a 'void'. In this exhibition, the viewer is invited to share moments of reflection stemming from 'Pain' and embark on a journey toward deeper enlightenment. 지선혜 작가의 개인전 《깨달음 Realize》는 인간의 내면과 외부 세계 사이에서 발생하는 다양한 ‘고(苦)’를 통해 우리가 얻을 수 있는 깊은 성찰과 깨달음의 과정을 조명합니다. 여기서 말하는 ‘고’는 그저 괴로운 고통으로 한정하지 않고, 인간의 의지로 제어할 수 없는 한계의 상황을 상징합니다. 작가는 여기에서 비롯되는 성찰의 과정을 회화(painting)라는 매체를 이용하여 시각 언어로 전환합니다. 특히, 모노톤으로 작업 된 작가의 회화는 인간이 경험하는 극도의 감정과 상황을 더욱 극명하게 드러내며 호소력 짙게 관객에게 전달됩니다. 전시는 ‘고’의 부정적인 양상을 드러내기보다는, 삶에서 마주하는 다양한 고의 양상을 포착하고, 그 속에서 찾아낸 깨달음과 성장의 순간을 담담하게 담아냅니다.
지선혜는 과거 약 10년의 세월 동안 자신의 본명 대신 ‘지과자’라는 이름으로 인간에 대한 깊은 관심과 탐구를 작업의 핵심으로 하며, 인물과 인체 표현 연구를 기반으로 다양한 실험적 작품을 선보였습니다. 주로 인물은 연필이나 펜과 같은 건식 재료를 이용한 드로잉으로, 그리고 그 너머의 보이지 않는 미지한 심상은 비비드한 색감의 추상 페인팅으로 채워왔고, 화면에 등장하는 다양한 페르소나를 통해 개인 단위의 내밀한 감정과 철학, 사상 등을 작업에 담고자 했습니다. 하지만 작업을 거듭하며 자신을 돌아보고 자아에 대한 탐험을 이어나가는 동안, 페르소나의 의미는 더 이상 개인이 아닌 더 넓고 깊은 세계로 펼쳐지게 됩니다. 작가는 작업을 통해 인간의 존재에 관해 탐구하고, 그 본성과 마주하면서 번뇌와 욕망의 고통에서 벗어나 진정한 해방을 찾는 경험을 하게 되었다고 설명합니다. 첫 개인전 이후 약 7년 만에 열리는 두 번째 개인전 《깨달음 Realize》는 작가에게는 자신의 본질로의 회귀와 여기서부터 비롯된 확장을 의미합니다.
이번 전시를 위해 제작된 신작은 모두 흑백의 모노톤으로 작업 되었습니다. 작품 속에서 ‘고’를 나타내는 표현은 마치 빛처럼 보이는 기둥의 형태로 표현되어 어둠과 인간과의 극명한 대비를 이루며 극도의 감정과 상황을 더욱 선명하게 드러냅니다. 이 기둥은 인간을 관통하면서 동시에 지탱하고 있으며, 인간은 이를 수용하면서 동시에 발산하기도 합니다. 이는 ‘고’의 존재가 부정적인 의미에서 그치지 않고, 오히려 고통과 번뇌 속에서 혹은 그 과정에서 희망과 깨달음을 찾아내는 인간의 능력을 상징적이고 비유적으로 보여줍니다. 나아가 관람객과 작품 사이의 감정적 연결고리의 역할을 수행하기도 합니다. 작품의 인물은 인간의 본질적인 모습을 표현하기 위해 대상을 특정할 수 있는 여러 물리적 조건, 이를테면 성별과 나이 등을 의도적으로 감추고 태초의 모습을 표현하고자 했습니다. 이는 인간을 옭아매는 번뇌로부터 모든 것을 비워내 ‘공(空)’의 모습을 암시하며 성장한 인간의 모습을 그려냅니다. 이번 전시에서 관람객은 ‘고’에서 비롯된 성찰의 순간들을 함께 나누며, 보다 깊은 깨달음을 향한 여정을 시작할 수 있습니다. 지선혜 작가의 작품 세계로의 여행을 통해 여러분 각자의 내면에 숨겨진 깨달음의 순간들을 발견하시기를 바랍니다. 이 전시가 여러분의 삶의 고뇌를 넘어서는 깊은 성찰과 영감을 제공하는 시간이 되기를 진심으로 희망합니다.
