STATEMENT
Duri Baek talks about the coexistence of two elements with opposite qualities such as vigilance and attention, concealment and exposure, chance and intention, light and darkness. Among them, her paintings express the will to live through the light and shadows that fall on plants. The light and shadows that fall on plants are the result of their fierce determination and efforts to survive on their own. In the process of translating this into paintings, the artist uses yellow for light and green for shadow. It seems that nothing else is needed yet to express the way of life she wants to convey.
After graduating from Hongik University's Department of Visual Design, Duri Baek has been working steadily under the genre of illustration, focusing on books, newspapers, magazines, product design, corporate advertisements, and participating in various exhibitions. Beyond simple illustrations,She has also been publishing her own stories, such as <I'm Trying to Make a Living as Drawing>, <How Am I?>, <A woman living alone>.
백두리 작가는 경계와 관심, 은폐와 노출, 우연과 의도, 빛과 어둠과 같은 반대 성질을 가진 두 요소의 공존을 이야기합니다. 그중 식물을 비추는 빛과 그림자를 통해 삶의 의지를 표현하는 회화 작업을 주로 선보이고 있습니다. 식물에 내려앉은 빛과 그림자는 스스로 살아남기 위한 치열한 각오와 노력의 산물입니다. 이를 회화로 옮기는 과정에서 작가는 빛을 나타내는 노란색, 그리고 그림자를 나타내는 녹색을 이용합니다. 그가 전하려는 삶의 방식을 표현하는데 빛과 그림자 외에 아직 다른 것은 필요하지 않은 듯 보입니다.
백두리는 홍익대학교 시각디자인과를 졸업한 뒤 일러스트레이션이라는 장르 아래 책을 중심으로 신문, 잡지, 제품 디자인, 기업 광고는 물론 다양한 전시에도 참여하며 꾸준한 활동을 선보여 왔습니다. 단순한 삽화를 넘어 자신의 이야기를 직접 그리고 쓴 출판물 <그리고 먹고살려고요>, <나는 안녕한가요?>, <혼자 사는 여자> 등의 출판 활동 또한 꾸준히 선보여왔습니다.
