Statement
Soyoung Kim reflects on urban life through photographs taken in everyday settings, capturing ephemeral moments filled with both illusion and a lingering sense of emptiness. Her work is characterized by the addition of painterly ambiguity to realistic landscapes, creating images that feel dreamlike and elusive. She paints on traditional Korean paper (jangji) using acrylic in countless vertical strokes, layering the medium repeatedly. The interaction between the soft texture of jangji and the cold, artificial quality of acrylic builds a surface rich in depth and complexity. This duality, warmth from the paper and coolness from the paint—comes together through brushwork to create a subtle, layered atmosphere on the canvas.
Statement
김소영은 일상에서 촬영한 사진을 통해 도시의 삶을 회상하고 환영적이면서 공허가 맴도는 순간을 포착하여 작업으로 옮긴다. 현실 풍경을 기반으로 회화의 기법적 모호성을 더하여 환영적인 화면을 만드는 것이 특징이다. 장지에 아크릴 물감을 수직의 결로 수없이 중첩하며 채색하는데, 장지와 아크릴의 물성이 만나 쌓이는 화면의 층위는 작품의 전반적인 깊이와 질감을 만든다. 장지 특유의 따뜻한 질감 위로 쌓이는 아크릴의 인공적이면서 차가운 질감은 붓터치의 결과 어우러져 화면의 양면적인 분위기를 만들어낸다.
